Joe Leon Abney

Joe Leon Abney, 81, of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

He was born on May 10, 1944, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to Floyd Abney and Bessie (McCury) Abney. On November 4, 1972 Joe married Dorothy Head.

He was a long-time resident of Poplar Bluff. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of 1st General Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Joe was a meat cutter at Jim Hogg’s Supermarket for many years. He enjoyed bow and gun hunting, woodworking, working in his vegetable garden. He loved to spend time with his family.

Joe is survived by three sons, Robert (Suzy) Abney, Jonathon Abney, and Timothy (Tracy) Abney; nieces, Kara, Sarah, Amy, and Jennifer; nephew, Thomas Abney; and one sister, Key Adams. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Bessie Abney; his wife, Dorothy Abney; one brother, Thomas Floyd Abney; and two sisters, Darlene Hefner, and Sandra Rose Abney. A host of family and friends also survive.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home at 366 College Street, Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Fitch-Hillis Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Crowley officiating. Interment will follow funeral service at Memorial Gardens Cemetery of Poplar Bluff. Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home is assisting with all arrangements.
